What Is TMJ Disorder?
TMJ, short for temporomandibular joint, refers to the joint connecting your jawbone to your skull, located just in front of each ear. This joint allows you to talk, chew, and yawn by working like a sliding hinge. When something disrupts the normal function of this joint or the muscles around it, the result is what is commonly called TMJ disorder, or TMD.
TMJ disorders can develop from a variety of causes, including teeth grinding, jaw injury, arthritis, chronic stress, or a misaligned bite. The condition can range from mild discomfort to significant pain that affects eating, speaking, and even sleep. Because TMJ disorder can stem from several different causes, an accurate diagnosis is an important first step toward effective treatment.
Common Signs of TMJ Disorder
- Jaw pain or tenderness, especially near the ears
- Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing the mouth
- Difficulty or discomfort while chewing
- Jaw locking or limited range of motion when opening the mouth
- Frequent headaches or migraines
- Facial pain, neck pain, or shoulder tension
- Earaches without signs of an ear infection
Diagnosing and Treating TMJ Disorder
Living With TMJ Disorder
